[posted July 2010] Workshop "Health and mortality with microdata", 29 April, BelfastA one-day workshop about the use of individual-level census data for health and mortality research will be held at Queen's University Belfast on Thursday 29 April. This workshop will offer an introduction to the services available under the ESRC Census Programme, including the Samples of Anonymised Records (SARs microdata) and the three census-based longitudinal studies (England and Wales; Northern Ireland; and Scotland). There will be some hands-on exercises during the workshop, which will enable participants to explore real data. The course convenor is Bendix Carstensen, Senior Statistician from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The software that will be used during the course is the freely available computer package R. There will be a short introduction for those unfamiliar with the package. Tom will work on a project entitled "Children, Young People and Social Care. Patterns of Service use from pre-birth to age 5 - Analysing evidence from the GUS Survey (Sweep 3)". [posted December 2008] Conference "Census Microdata: findings and futures" in ManchesterCensus microdata, like the Public Use Microdata Samples in the USA and Samples of Anonymised Records in the UK, has made a substantial contribution to social science on an international basis. "Census Microdata: findings and futures" will provide an opportunity to hear about and discuss research undertaken with census microdata internationally and consider the future role of census microdata. The PI is Jane Falkingham (Southampton) and Paul Boyle is one of four Co-Directors. We expect the SLS to play a central role in much of the work conducted by the centre. His research project involves panel data analysis of the effects of family migration on women's earnings in Britain and the US. Hosted ConferenceIn February 2004, the LSCS hosted an event designed to publicise the value of longitudinal data analysis and to draw attention to the breadth of longitudinal data available in Scotland. The meeting attracted over 100 people and included a range of expert speakers from throughout the UK. ESRC consultancyPaul Boyle and Vernon Gayle are part of a ESRC-funded collaborative group led by John Bynner to investigate 'The future of panel and cohort studies in the UK'.
