Data DictionaryEnter the data dictionary. IntroductionThe SLS data dictionary provides information on the variables held in the SLS database. It is possible to search for (parts of) words in the variable description, browse through a list of tables held in the SLS database, each of which contain a number of variables, or view all the variables in an alphabetical list. We would encourage you to explore these various methods to help you learn about SLS data. [Note: searches using the 'variable description' box will only interrogate information which describes the variable as a whole. It does not interrogate the information on specific variable categories. Thus, a search for 'economic activity' in the 'variable description' box provides a list of variables, one of which is 'ALWEEK9'. By clicking on 'ALWEEK9' you find that categories 59-61 of this variable relate to unemployed people. However, had you searched for 'unemployed' in the 'variable description' box you would not find this variable. If you are seeking specific variable categories, you might find it more helpful to explore the 'list of variables in alphabetical order' option.] Help resourcesThe most commonly used census variables in the SLS, including their variable names for 1991 and 2001, are listed in a separate document that can be downloaded here. A Power Point presentation giving a comprehensive introduction to the Data Dictionary can be downloaded here This dictionary is designed to be reasonably similar to that created for the England and Wales LS, which you may also wish to explore: http://www.celsius.lshtm.ac.uk. |
